Recovering from the system drive

Windows is constantly overwriting deleted files on the system drive (usually C:). What can you do, if you wish to recover files from the system drive?

A) If you can accept the loss and want to take your chances: start recovering as soon as possible. Do not install any software.

B) If you want to stop overwriting deleted files on the system drive, you must turn off the computer now. There is no other way. But how to turn it off? There is no easy answer. And then you have the challenge to recover data from a computer that you must not turn on.
